A Great Way to Spend Your Summer!

Volunteer as a lifeguard at the Chebeague Recreation Center this summer. You can make a difference in the community AND earn a $1500 scholarship towards the school of your choice!
  • Become a certified lifeguard. The CRC will fund your training and certification
  • Earn money towards your future education
  • Develop leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Gain valuable work experience and build your resume!

Lifeguards from the mainland are welcome! Many of our staff has commuted on the ferry and used bicycles to get to the pool. The CRC provides ferry tickets to those who commute.

Program Details

PREREQUISITES
  • 15+ years old by July 1, 2022
  • Ability to swim 300 yards continuously
  • Ability to tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
  • Ability to complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds by starting in the water, swimming 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 lb object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to starting point, and exit the water without using steps or ladders.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
  • Complete certification
    • Complete the approved online lifeguard training course
    • Attend virtual training sessions
    • Attend practical pool training at the CRC pool
  • Commit to 125 hours of volunteer in-service training at the CRC pool during the summer season
    • About 10-12 hours per week on a flexible schedule
  • On successful completion of the training and volunteer in-service training, each individual will receive $1,500 in an educational assistance scholarship from the CRC.
